Adventures in Seafood: from Kardamyli to Monemvasia

Friday, June 2
Day 7 of the tour
Between Kardamyli and Monemvasia

This is red mullet, fresh from the sea and apparently deep fried. More on this shortly.

Friday started with Dafni's guided walk through Kardamyli (Mary's previous post)
before we loaded up to head back to the mountains.

The Mani region of Greece is mostly mountainous and considered even more remote than other parts of Greece. It's the middle finger reaching down towards the Mediterranean Sea.
This map was proudly displayed on the wall of a remote coffee shop we visited for a pit stop
and very thick coffee. ("H"in the Greek alphabet makes an "ee" sound).

Here's most of our group on coffee break with Cheryl and Jane in front.

Dafni assured us that this sludge is what we should expect at the bottom of a well-brewed
cup of authentic coffee. Just leave it there!

We've noticed these old, large olive oil jars being used in decorating all over the Mani peninsula,
as flower planters and - embedded in walls?

Onward...
Ah, switchbacks! Descending one side of a mountain brought us to...

...the small but lovely seaside town of Lineni for an extravagant lunch.

Mary and Heather get ready to try the red mullet.

My first red mullet. We eyed each other doubtfully. Dafni explained how to use our fingers to split it open, remove the spine, then eat the whole thing in a few bites. Heads and tails as well 😯

It was crunchy πŸ˜„

A bit of shopping for "evil eye" jewelry - to ward off the bad spirits - and we were on the road again to...
Monemvasia! We like to call it "the Rock."

More adventures to come.
