On the road to Salzburg

Leaving Munich and on to Salzburg!  Thursday Sept 28, 2023.

We left Munich on a bus heading to Salzburg thru the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, with a stop on the way of -yes- a beer garden.  In Hofer Austria we stopped at the Turner brewery. Johanna showed us around, she is a beer sommelier.  (A beer sommelier, is a trained professional, working in the industry, who specializes in the service and knowledge of beer, similar to a traditional wine sommelier. The knowledge required for certification includes an understanding of styles, brewing, ingredients, history of beer and brewing, glassware, beer service, draught systems, beer tasting, and food pairings).

This brewery started 400 years ago in 1601. In 1175, Josef Sigl bought it and ever since then, a Josef Sigl has run/managed the business. 80% of their business is barrels sold to restaurants and bars.  We then had lunch with a sausage and pretzel at the brewery.  We had to take the skin off of the sausage to eat it, but it mostly tasted like a bratwurst.

After lunch we headed out to a small town called Mondsee.  There we visited St. Michael's church, which is about 30 minutes outside of Salzburg .  This was the church that was used in the Sound of Music for the wedding ceremony.  It use to be an important church in the area and was attached to a nunnery dating back to the 1700s.  Now the nunnery is a hotel, but the church is still used and is spectacular.

We went on to Salzburg from Mondsee, but I will talk about that in my next post.

Myself and fellow Rick Steve’s tour people enjoying our day.

The picture above and the next 3 pictures are of the church that Maria Von Trapp got married in - in the movie.  In real life, she really got married in the convent!

The picture above shows that a convent was attached to the church.  They didn’t do any of the outside of this church in the Sound of Music movie, but I still liked it.
Here is the outside of the brewery that we ate lunch at.  The building was a few hundred years old.
Here is me listening intently about fermentation
This beer sommelier Johanna, really knew her stuff.

This was the name of the brewery we went to.
Often when I travel, I use the Google Translate app.
Here is a sample of what it can do for you.  The above picture was a sign in German hanging on the wall.  The picture below was from me just taking a picture of the bottom part of the sign and then it is translated pretty well for me.

  1. What would we ever do without Google Translate? The church is stunning! Looks like a lot of fun - hope the beer was good :)
