Day 8: Ancient Aspendos Sat, May 02, 2026
We'll begin our day with a tour through Konya, including the busy maze of its sprawling bazaar — a time-tripping treasure trove of hardware, household items, clothing, jewelry, religious paraphernalia, and cell phone accessories. Then we'll head over the Taurus Mountains and stop to visit Aspendos, one of the best-preserved Roman theaters of the ancient world. In the late afternoon we'll arrive in the Mediterranean resort town of Antalya, where we'll take an orientation walk and set you free for dinner on your own.
The following 7 pictures were from the Aspendos site, from 160AD. First 4 are from the theatre and the last 2 were from the walk I took I. The archeological site where there were medieval buildings.

This was our view from the lunch restaurant!
Rainy start to our stay at the Mediterranean town of Antalya. We entered the city thru Hadrians gate (built in 130AD to honor the Roman emperor Hadrian’s visit). Day 9 Sunday May 3 This was our free day in Antalya, it started off with sun, but became rainy. A group of us signed up to do a full Turkish bath in the afternoon. I’m not sure if I can take any pictures, but I will if I can. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures of this cute old Roman town. This is the other side of Hadrians gate
They had a beautiful harbor area. The cliffs in the background are travertine rock.

The mountains in the background were cloud covered.
I had to include the ships with fake pirates on them. Apparently, that is a favorite of the Russian tourists.
OK. Here is the run down on the Turkish bath!!!! These are all the pictures I could take…. Just on the way in, but it was wonderful….. Men and Women sides a separate.
Here’s the way it went in the Turkish bath…1) had to strip down to just underwear and they gave you a towel and non slip slippers
2) went in the first room and laid down on a very warm marble slab in a very warm room and right when you laid down, they splashed warm water on you.
3) After about 10 minutes of just relaxing that way, they moved you into a sauna for 5 minutes or so.
4) Then into the steam room that was super hot and super steamy for about 2 minutes.
5) Up next, you went into a room and was again on a warm marble slab, but this time you were in the room that they washed you. But it wasn’t just a wash!
6) They washed you down front and back with some kind of great smelling soap.
7) Then they scrubbed you- and I mean, really scrubbed you all over to get off all of your dead skin.
8) Next, they put some kind of foam soap on you and cleaned you again while giving you a great massage.
9) Washing of our hair and a scalp massage was next.
10) Rinse off with cool water
11) Mud mask facial while sipping apple tea
12) And for the grand finale, an all over body oil massage for about 30 minutes
It was a really unique experience and I am definitely squeaky clean!
We leave Antalya bright and early tomorrow morning……only 3 full days of touring left…I did buy a bathing suit for the Roman hot springs tomorrow.
