India awaits - travel day





Travel day or should I say days!   
My departure from Grand Rapids Michigan was at 11:40am on 1/5/2024, and my arrival in Delhi India (via Newark, New Jersey) is 1/6/2024 at 9:50pm.  Even though they are 10.5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, that is still a full day of travel!   Christine has a bigger airport to start out of - Boston’s Logan airport, so her departure is not until 5:25pm and she’ll arrive in Delhi a couple of hours after me at 11:40pm.  I’d say we timed that pretty well!  
I am feeling pampered, because this is the first time that I have flown international business class (which is like first class).  The pampering starts at the airport.  I had an 8 hour layover so I was able to take advantage of the United Polaris lounge in Newark.  An unlimited bar, buffet, showers, sleep rooms, dining room, coffee bar etc!   I have to say, it was pretty awesome and much different than trying to find a quiet and clean spot in the main airport somewhere.  

During my flight, as I looked out at the moon reflecting on the Black Sea (that is the picture at the top of this post),  wearing the super comfy pajamas that I was given on the flight, I thought how very lucky and blessed that I am to travel to all of these fabulous places. With all the journeys, I don’t always take time to just really appreciate that I am able to travel, and in this case, to do the travel part in luxury.   WOW!  I am beyond grateful! 

Christine and I both arrived safely to the New Dehli airport.  We each had a driver and guide drive us through the busy and crazy streets to our hotel in suburban Dehli.  Travel days can be eventful, but this one went pretty smoothly for both of us.  



Hmmmm, it seems like every trip starts with white wine! C’est la vie!  Or in Hindi यही जीवन है

Official tour time! Let’s jump right in!

  On Sunday May 18, we met our Rick Steves group mid afternoon, along with our guide Andrea (pictured above).  I’m looking forward to having him as our guide because he was born and raised just outside Palermo.  I’m sure he will have a ton of knowledge.   After meeting everyone, we all took a walking tour around the neighborhood to get our bearings, learn the history and see unique things.  You can see Christine and I are fresh and ready to tour!  On the way to our first stop, we saw a fountain nicknamed “the fountain of shame”.  Legends say it got that name because in the  building in the background with the dome lived the monks, and a dome, not pictured, but in direct line of sight of the fountain and the monks dome, was the convent.  Of course, the statues are naked…thus the nickname.     We also saw a peaceful Pro Palestine parade march past us.  Our guide told us Sicily is fearful of war, since they have been occupied and ...

Taormina: Too Beautiful to Believe

Monday, May 26, 2025 Taormina, Sicily  We entered lovely Taormina last evening. Andrea gave us a quick orientation to the town and then we had a free evening to stroll around or just gawk at the mountain.  The stairways do help make Taormina beautiful, but the real beauty is in the views, like this one from our room's balcony right after we checked in. Mamma Etna in her full glory! Mamma is cooking. See the steam? The town was full of lovely shops offering higher-end clothing, souvenirs, and of course - food! Here's a giant cannolo in a colorful display for us tourists. The Godfather is popular here. A very narrow stretto. Someone had a private little teatro di pupi next to their front door.
